Family Figurines: Getting Five People To Look Right

Family Figurines: Getting Five People To Look Right

Why the family piece is the hardest

One person is a portrait. Five people are five portraits that have to agree with each other: the same light, the same scale, the same moment in time. Get the height relationship wrong — a teenager half a head too tall — and the whole piece reads as a drawing rather than a likeness, even if every individual face is perfect.

One photo, or five?

A single good group photo is the ideal starting point: everybody is already scaled and lit together, and nobody was photographed on a different day. It is worth taking one more photo specifically for the keepsake — outdoors in open shade, everyone standing close, nobody hiding behind anybody else.

If you only have separate photos, that is fine too. Send one clear photo per person, taken at roughly the same time of year if possible, and tell us who is tallest in real life. We will rebuild the group from the individual portraits and email a proof of the arrangement.

Arranging a group that looks natural

  • Pair people who touch in real life. A hand on a shoulder does more for believability than any amount of detail.
  • Vary the heights honestly. An adult in front, a child slightly turned — not a neat row.
  • Keep one prop maximum. A dog, a football, a bunch of flowers. Two props and the group stops looking like a family.
  • Match the expressions. All laughing, or all calm. A half-smiling group looks assembled rather than photographed.

The base and the engraving

Family pieces sit on a wider base than single figures so the group does not feel crowded. The family name and a year engraved on the front is the detail that turns five likenesses into a record of a specific year — and it is the thing people notice when they pick it up.

Proofs, revisions and timing

Expect one extra proof round compared with a single figure, because the arrangement is worth getting right. Revisions are free and unlimited, and nothing is printed until you approve. For a specific date — an anniversary, a birthday, a family reunion — send the photos as early as you can and we will confirm the production window in writing.
