The Costume Nobody Ever Changes

The Costume Nobody Ever Changes

Why the costume is the decision that sticks

After a few hundred thousand orders we noticed something odd. When customers revise their design proof, they change almost everything except the costume. They will tweak the hair colour, ask for a different pose, change the base, add a prop, remove a prop — but once they have picked the outfit, they keep it. It is the single most "sticky" decision in the whole process.

It makes sense. The face gives you likeness; the costume gives you story. A witch hat and a small black cat says "the Halloween she planned for months". A knitted scarf and a lantern says "the autumn walk you still talk about".

Six moods, and how to choose between them

Our character wardrobes are grouped into six moods. Pick the feeling first, not the item — the exact pieces can be changed later at no cost.

  • Gothic. Velvet, lace, a candle. Dramatic, for the person who treats a party like a performance.
  • Woodland. Wool, leaves, a lantern. Warm and grounded — the mood most people land on when they want cosy instead of spooky.
  • Classic. Overcoat, scarf, a paper cup. The least seasonal of the six, which is exactly why it stays on the shelf the longest.
  • Festive. Knitwear, a wrapped parcel, a small dog in a jumper. Built for December, photographed all year.
  • Heroic. Cape, boots, a medal. For kids, for runners, for anyone with a main-character streak.
  • Everyday. Their actual favourite outfit, rebuilt exactly as it is. The most requested mood of all, and the one that ages best.

The photo matters more than the wardrobe

People overthink the character and underthink the photo. A great costume built from a bad photo looks off; a simple costume built from a great photo looks uncanny in the best way. So start with the picture.

What we need is narrow: one person, front-facing, evenly lit, face visible, nothing covering the eyes. Overcast daylight beats harsh sun. A phone camera is fine. If all you have is a crowded group photo we can usually isolate one person and rebuild them — and we will say so honestly if we need something clearer.

You do not have to decide before you order

Send the photo and we email a design proof before anything is printed. Change the costume as many times as you like — revisions are free and unlimited — and nothing goes into production until you approve it. The costume is a decision you are allowed to make slowly.
